The first is a compact digital camera with 6 megapixels and 12x optical zoom, and it is a camera 10-megapixel compact with 3x optical zoom. Claiming that the price is substantially the same, which device is best to choose a casual photographer with plans for photographing people, wildlife, landscape and action shots?

I have no idea of your budget. A digital SLR I've seen comments recently was the Pentax K10D. 10 MP, Anti-Shake integrated housing, interchangeable lenses. I offer this opinion because your intended uses. Sooner or later you'll probably want to try macro photography. A camera with interchangeable lenses is the only how you can do true macro. (Zoom lenses marked "macro" Usually you give a 1:4 – 1 / 4 size – reproduction. A macro lens true will, depending on the brand, provide a minimum of 1:2 – 1 / 2 size to 1:1 – Size of life. Some brands require a 1:1 tube, others do not.) Also, for sport digital zoom on a digital camera may not be long enough. In addition, an optical zoom gives much better results.
